Afghans for Afghans Knits

Cephalopod Yarns was hosting a great giveaway in the months of May and June. For anyone who donated hats, socks, or mittens were given a $32 giftcard to their shop. It was extremely generous of them!

I decided to use up some of my stash and make several little doodads for them.

Pattern: Rustling Leaves Beret by Alana Dakos from Coastal Knits (ravelled here). I need to knit so many more things from this book.
Yarn: Valley Yarns Huntington in colorway 24 Mustard, 0.76 skeins = 165.7 yds.
Made for: Afghans for Afghans.
Size: One size fits most.
Needles: US size 3 (3.25 mm) & US size 2 (2.75 mm)
Notions: None
Dates: 04.09.12-04.11.12
Cost: $3.22 (yarn cost) + $10 (pattern cost) = $13.22. The book cost me $30 at my LYS (quite steep compared to the retail price at other places). I have plans/yarn of knitting 2 more patterns (at least), so I'm saying each pattern is $10 for now until I  have completed the patterns I plan on making (Rocky Coast Cardigan and Bayside Pullover.)
Mods: None. I never look good in hats. Hence, the lack of face in the picture.

Pattern: Twirl by numma numma (ravelled here.) Numma numma was working on this design during the episode when the Knit Girllls went down to Atlanta for Stitches, I think. I remember falling in love with the pattern and immediately cast on after I saw the back episode. That's what I love about watching old shows--you can succumb to instant gratification more often.
Yarn: Madelinetosh Tosh Sock in Kale, 0.85 skeins = 335.8 yds. This turned out to be a much browner color than whatever was in my head. I'm such a good judge of yarn color, ya know.
Made for: Afghans for Afghans.
Size: One size fits many.
Needles: US size 1 (2.25 mm)
Notions: None
Dates: 04.19.12 - 04.27.12
Cost: $21.36 (yarn cost)
Mods: Shortened the whole thing a bit compared to the pattern. I loved the Dutch heel.

Pattern: Thorpe by Kristen Kapur (ravelled here.)
Yarn: Noro Silk Garden Lite in colorway 2030, held double; 2 skeins = 272 yards; purchased in 2009 from Webs & Knit Picks City Tweed DK in colorway CH96 Porpoise, 0.48 skeins = 59 yards
Made for: Afghans for Afghans.
Size: One size fits large heads.
Needles: US size 8 (5.0 mm); Size I hook for the border.
Notions: None
Dates: 12.10.10-12.13.10
Cost: $12.98 (Noro Silk Garden Lite cost)
Mods: A few. I  had originally intended to keep the hat for myself, but I never wore it. The version of the hat that I made for my brother turned out very nicely.

Pattern: Simple hat pattern off of the top of my head (ravelled here, here, and here) and Kathleen by Jane Richmond (ravelled here).
Yarn: Valley Yarns Valley Superwash in Black, Brownie Crimson, and Natural, 1 skein each & Cascade 220 in 7827 Goldenrod, 0.75 skeins = 165 yards.
Made for: Afghans for Afghans.
Size: One size fits most.
Needles: US size 7 (4.5 mm) for the st st hats, and US size 6 (4.0 mm) & US size 8 (5.0 mm) for Kathleen
Notions: None
Dates: 06.06.12 - 06.13.12
Cost: $16.48 (Valley Yarns yarn cost) + $5.25 (Cascade 220 yarn cost) + $4.50 (pattern cost) = $26.23
Mods: See Ravelry notes.

Overall, it felt really good to be able to knit for a good cause. And be selfish in return.

  1. Those are some seriously cute hats. I haven't had a chance to knit charity hats in forever.
